Updated on: 24.03.2017

Unfortunately not many books have been written in English on Israeli Wine and even more unfortunately a few of them may be quite difficult to obtain today. There are however some to be found, and each one of them provides the reader with a different view on the Israeli wine scene. Some focus on the wines, others on the wineries and others again on the Israel wine scene as a whole. A wine lover interested in Israeli Wine or looking to fill a shelf in his library will surely find interest in them all.

The Comprehensive Guide to Israeli Wines/ Haim Gan, Sagi Cooper and Yair Koren (2016)

Israeli wine writers and critics Haim Gan, Sagi Cooper and Yair Koren joined forces to produce The Comprehensive Guide to Israeli Wines: a quality guide, first class tool for Israeli wine consumers and lovers in Israel and around the world. The guide was written in Hebrew and English and contains articles in the field of Israeli wine, short reviews of Israeli wine regions, Israeli wine and food pairing and more.

The editors reviewed all of the wines received for tasting – more than 650 samples from more than 100 wineries. The Guide includes only wines which have scored 84 and up. The Guide contains information about every winery mentioned, winery grading, reviews of exceptional wines and a mark for every wine stated (on a 100 point scale).

Wineries were graded by grape bunches (5 being the highest grade) – a grading based on multiple parameters, all of consumer importance: quality of the wines, variety, involvement of the winery in the Israeli wine scene and in the society, touristic importance, etc. Exceptional wines from every winery were awarded with short and comprehensive tasting remarks in addition to their scores.

To be obtained in wine shops, wineries, Guide website: thewines.co.il and at Grape Man website: grape-man.com (Hebrew page).

Wines of Israel /Eliezer Sacks & Adam Montefiore. (2012)

Former wine books edited by Eliezer Sacks include Shvill HaYayin and Yayin Israeli in Hebrew and The Wine Route of Israel in English. Wines of Israel is a condensed version of the Wine Route of Israel, but presented differently.

Adam Montefiore has written the foreword and the introductory background information covering history milestones, grape varieties, wine regions etc. Montefiore has worked over 30 years in the wine trade in both the UK and Israel and also writes on wine for the Jerusalem Post and Jewish Chronicle.

Wines of Israel is a compact, concise, practical guide to 100 wineries, large and small, established and new. There is a page on each winery including the winery story, details of the vineyards, winemaker and wines. Each winery is accompanied by a large page sized colored photograph of a wine chosen to represent the winery.

The Bible of Israeli Wines/Michael (Mimi) Ben Joseph (2002)

This was the first modern book on Israeli wine in English, following Michael Ben Joseph’s first book in Hebrew, published in 1990. Many wine professionals and experts attribute their learning about wine for the first time to these books. The book has provides an excellent background to Israeli wine, emphasizing on viticulture and geography, as well as archaeology, history and religion. The forward to the book was written by the highly respected Professor Amos Hadas.

Unfortunately, The Bible of Israeli Wine is out of print (and today also outdated, especially regarding the wineries section).

The Ultimate Rogov's Guide to Israeli Wines/Daniel Rogov (2011)

Just before his passing away in September 2011, Daniel Rogov put the finishing touches on the 2012 edition of his Rogov's Guide to Israeli Wines series. First published in 2005, this annual guidebook has become the source of information on Israel's flourishing wine industry. The newest and final edition was the most comprehensive ever, describing, sorting and ranking nearly 2,500 wines from more than 150 wineries, offering vintage reports for the past decade, describing the history of Israeli winemaking, and including maps of Israel's growing regions and grape varietals, winery contact information, a glossary, a wine tasting guide, and a rating chart for personal use. This is a classic wine guidebook.

Rogov's Guide to Israeli & World Kosher Wines 2011/ Daniel Rogov (2011)

Kosher wines compete today on the same level with some of the best wines in the world. Yet, until Daniel Rogov published Rogov's Guide to Israeli & World Kosher Wines 2011, there had been no comprehensive guide to this booming market. Sadly, Rogov passed away later on in that year, so there is no continuance to this important project. Israel's preeminent wine critic described, sorted and ranked in his guide more than 500 kosher wines, from the USA, Argentina, Chile, Austria, France, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and of course Israel. Also included is a chapter on what makes wine kosher.

Books on winemaking in Israel and the ancient world in biblical times:

Other than books relating to winemaking in Israel in modern times, there are a few books to be found which tackle wine making in the Holy Land (and the rest of the ancient world) from the historical aspect.

Ancient Wine: The Search for the Origins of Viniculture/ Patrick E. McGovern (2007)

This book, with a forward by Robert G. Mondavi, is the first comprehensive and up-to-date account of the earliest stages of vinicultural history and prehistory, which extends back into the Neolithic period and beyond. Elegantly written and richly illustrated, Ancient Wine opens up whole new chapters in the fascinating story of wine and the vine by drawing upon recent archaeological discoveries, molecular and DNA sleuthing, and the texts and art of long-forgotten peoples.

Patrick McGovern takes us on a personal odyssey back to the beginnings of this consequential beverage when early hominids probably enjoyed a wild grape wine. The reader follows the course of human ingenuity in domesticating the Eurasian vine and learning how to make and preserve wine some 7,000 years ago. From success to success, viniculture stretched out its tentacles and entwined itself with one culture after another (whether Egyptian, Iranian, Israelite, or Greek) and laid the foundation for civilization itself.

The book includes an extensive chapter about the ancient wine scene of the Holy Land.

Divine Vintage: Following the Wine Trail from Genesis to the Modern Age/ Joel Butler and Randall Heskett (2012)

Wine connoisseur Joel Butler teamed up with biblical historian Randall Heskett for a remarkable journey back in time through the biblical wine trail in order to understand the wines people were drinking 2,000 to 3,500 years ago. The book discusses the origins of wine, the myth of Shiraz, and how wine infiltrated the biblical world. This fascinating narrative is full of astounding facts including the myths of the Phoenician, Greek, Roman, and Jewish wine gods, the emergence of kosher wine, as well as the use of wine in sacrifices and other rites. It also takes a close a look at contemporary modern wines made with ancient techniques, and guides the reader to experience the wines that the first wine maker Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus drank.

The second part of the book touches modern wine making in the ancient world, taking the reader along the Biblical wine trail in our times, describing what these biblical terroirs continue to produce nowadays.

Winemaking in Ancient Israel/ Garrett Peck (2013) (Kindle edition)

This Kindle book is an illustrated examination of winemaking in ancient Israel, in which author Garrett Peck takes the reader back to ancient days in order to explain how the Jews made their wine on crush pads and goat skins, while explaining that wine was not only necessary to celebrate Judaism and the rites of Christianity, but was more importantly a staple of life to the ancient Israelites.
