One of the most unique sceneries in Israel is also home to some of the country's most unique wineries and wines. The mainly basaltic soils, reminder of a long past raging volcanic area, along with tuff, scoria and petrified soils, are wonderfully suited for vine growing. Rising from about 400 meters above sea level at the south, up to 1,200 meters at the foot of towering Mount Hermon to the north, the Golan range's 60 km strip provides a feast of diverse terrains, spectacular views and great wines.
Classic red Bordeaux varieties, along with white Chardonnay, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc are the classics of this region.
Many wineries are worth a visit in the Golan, the well-known Golan Heights winery of course, and also Chateau Golan, Bazelet Ha'Golan, Pelter and Ortal - located beneath the extinct Avital volcano.
