Between the coastal plain south of Tel-Aviv and the Judean Mountain range, lay the sprawling rounded Judean foothills. The region consists of 4 sub regions: Ayalon Valley, Gezer, Adolam and Lachish. This is a region well known for its wines through biblical times, and to this day you can find biblical "Gat" wine producing facilities, in proximity to modern wineries. Many medium sized, small and boutique wineries form a developing true "route de vins", and produce quality wines.
The Syrah variety gives excellent results in this area, as do some Merlot wines, and also varietal Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah (Duriff). In the southern parts of this region successful experiments have been made with French Mediterranean varieties, e.g. Marsanne, Marselan, Tannat, Carignan and Mourvedre, and also the South African variety Pinotage. Among the white varieties, Sauvignon Blanc is the favorite. Grapes from the higher altitude vineyards are used for many premium wine series.
There are more than 30 wineries in the area, including Israel's most productive winery of late – Barkan with its modern visitor's center, terroir oriented Tzora, Ella Valley Vineyards, Teperberg, Mony, Flam, Agur and Sea Horse.
