The Upper Galilee mountain ridge, extending to the Lebanese border, and especially the green valley's lying between the mountains, is the region (along with theGolan) most suited for viticulture in Israel. High quality grapes can be found in the Kedesh Valley overlooking the low lying Hula valley and lake. Other well-known sub regions surround the ancient city of Safed and the Meron Mountain towering above it, more than 1,200 meters above sea level. One of them is the Dalton range which inhabits the well-known Kerem Ben Zimra vineyard. The high altitude, cool breezes, differences between day and night temperatures and rich well drained soils, make the area ideal for wine grapes cultivation, and especially for complex wines that age well.
Many varieties are grown here, but you should expect especially high quality from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay.
Main wineries to visit are Dalton, Galil Mountain, and quite a few boutique wineries, mainly surrounding Safed, and in and near the village of Ramot Naftali.
